BENIN CITY – In an effort to encourage technical education, the National Educational Research and Development Council in collaboration with the National Business and Technical Examination Board have concluded plans to collaborate on the new senior secondary certificate examination.

Speaking at press conference in Benin City yesterday, the Registrar of the National Education Research and Development Council, Professor Godswill Obioma said that it was the first time the two examination bodies were coming together for benchmark activities.

He added that the National Education Research and Development Council has created new syllabus to emphasize trade and development which according to him, was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.

The Registrar stated further that the council had established collaborations with reputable publishing firms in the country to produce textbooks that would contain the contents of the new syllabus, adding that the council with the National Business and Technical Examinations Board would work with Polytechnic and Universities to teach the contents of the new syllabus.

Also speaking at the conference, the Registrar of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, Dr. Olatunde Aworanti said that youths must acquire skills since government cannot employ everybody, stating that three committees had been set-up to ensure that Nigerians embrace the new curriculum.

Dr. Aworanti also added that concerted efforts had been made with relevant stakeholders for Nigeria’s education sector to be more functional and competitive for students.

He said “textbooks with the local contents would be produced as much as possible.”

While answering question on how the programme would be funded, Professor Godwill Obioma said that the Programme would be funded through the funds of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
