BENIN CITY: Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki said Nigeria is in dare need of fundamental change in the entire system as people are calling for restructuring but the restructuring should start from the educational system and set up.
He made this known while receiving members of Nigerian Academy of Education led by Prof. Abigail Imogie who were on a courtesy visit to government house in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
Obaseki said the problem faced as a nation is a fall out from the educational sector which have laid more emphases on degree and qualification not backed by skills. “We no longer taught handcraft and it is missing in this generation and as such we need to rethink educational architecture and stop the emphases on degree qualification not backed by skills”.
He said one of the challenge faced today is not properly rationalizing as most people under the age of 40 to 50 years old grew up in a generation where nothing was produce, stressing that the educational sector was not skilled towards helping the nation to produce.
The governor said education is one of the cardinal policies of his administration. “As a government, we believe that to create a better and more productive society, we must ensure that the people are educated and trained”.
He said as part of the strategic plan of his administration, his government has to renew the whole education apparatus in the state. He added that the plan is to start from the basic, as it will help to ix the entire system.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation prof. Abigail Imogie informed the governor that the body is in Benin City on their annual congress as this year’s congress is holding in the State. She said the congress will commence from 6th to 10th November 2017.
She appeal for assistance and support from the governor to help the body organize a successful congress as its members would come from across the nation.
