BENIN CITY – Ekpon (Igueben LGA)____Following the executive order to ban night grazing, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State command, Mr Johnson Kokumo has called on residents in communities to provide the Police with information of herdsmen grazing their cattles at night.
CP Kokumo made the call at the Commissioning of the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekpon Town, Igueben Local government area of Edo State, weekend.
He said the State government and other security agencies together with the Police are putting all necessary efforts to prevent farmers and herdsmen clashes in the state, especially in rural communities.
Kokumo also urged residents to cooperate with the Police by providing prompt and credible information to the Police.
According to him ” Please cooperate with us and help improve on our services by giving us informations of criminals. You see something, say something.
On the Commissioning, the CP said “two things caught me by surprise, one was that this police station was built essentially through community efforts.
Earlier the Chairman of Igueben Local Government Area, Engr Josie Ogedegbe, said the council was ready to partner with the Police in order to bring about desired results of peace and harmony needed to boost economic development in the area.
Delivering his welcome address, the Chairman of Ekpon Police Station Building/Handover Committee, Mr Celestine Edobor said the need that led to the building of a modern police in the community was as a results of incessant robbery attacks and killings of farmers by fulani herdsmen.
Edobor said “the most recent is a robbery incident at a nearby hotel where 12 units of LG plasma television sets were stolen over night. The criminals take advantage of lack of capacity of the present security organs on ground.
“The project we are about to commission today was funded entirely through community contributions of our sons and daughters within Nigeria and in diaspora at a cost of thirty million naira without assistance from the Local Government and government agencies”, he stressed.
