Asaba – Armed Gunmen on Monday evening invaded Cable Point area of Asaba, Delta State killing a Police Officer in a police patrol van attached to ‘C’ Division, leaving one in critical condition and others escaped.
The attacked police officer reportedly died in an undisclosed hospital as a result of excess blood lost.
The hoodlums, according to sources, ambushed the police van at about 8:30pm, attacked the five police officers with dangerous weapons, including machetes and thereafter carted away two of their AK 47 abandoned by the fleeing officers.
It was gathered that two of the policemen were severely cut with machetes by the fierce gunmen while the three others escaped with various degree of injuries
The Delta state Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhammad Mustafa confirmed the incident saying some suspects connected to the incident have been arrested while investigations had commenced.
He said “it is true we lost one of our men, but some of them (the hoodlums) have been arrested this morning ( Tuesday). We are trailing others, and I can assured you there is no hiding place for them here”
Meanwhile, this latest attack brings the number of cases of attacks on police patrol teams by gunmen to three within the space of two months in Asaba.
It would be recurred that two months ago, two AK 47 rifles were reportedly taken away in a similar attack at Isse-Asagba town, near Asaba, the State capital.
