BENIN CITY – As part of its objectives to promote, accelerate and empower women politically and economically for national development, a Non Governmental Organisation under the aegis of Nigerian League of Women Voters’ (NILOWV) has concluded plans to register no fewer than 5000 new members who are above 18 into its fold in the month of August.
The Chairperson of the group, Rt. Hon. (Mrs.) Elizaberth Ativie made the disclosure when she led executive members of NILOWV on a courtesy visit to leadership of Edo state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday in Benin City.
Hon Ativie said the NILOWV’s quest to register more members was informed by low participation of women in governance in Nigeria, hence, the group’s resolved to take its drive to the grassroots.
She stated that the voluntary organization is committed to enlighten and educate women on their civil rights and duties within the context of the country.
Ative informed NILOWV has its structures across the 18 local government areas of the State, just as she revealed that the group was fashioned after an American model of positioning women in politics.
While maintaining that NILOWV is a non-sectarian, non-profitable association and non-discriminatory, the former speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, however, said that other objectives of the association is to accelerate participation of women in corporate organisations as well as to stimulate them towards acquiring enterprenuerial skills.
Responding, Edo State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Roland Osakue advised that group to engaged in proper education of its members.
While commending the group for the visit, Sir. Osakue sued for love and support amongst members, just as he assured NILOWV of the state’s NUJ partnership
