ABUJA – The House of Representatives yesterday urged the the Management of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB to suspend its demand of National Identity Number (NIN) from prospective candidates.

This was was sequence to a motion moved by Hon. Zainab Gimba under matters of public importance at plenary, which was presided over by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabimilla.

In her lead debate, the lawmaker lamented that the request by JAMB has put an untold hardship on prospective Candidates especially those in the rural area of the country.

“In some constituencies, it will take them up to five hours to get to the urban centres to get internet services. As it is an information to further hardship. It is also inconclusive”.

“If JAMB wants to assist National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in any form, this is not the way to go about it, there are other better ways to do it”.

The House then resolved that until 80 percent of Nigerians have obtained NIN, the board should not implement the policy.

The House also adopted the motion when it was put to a voice vote by the presiding officer, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila

It was later referred to its Committees on National Population Commission and Tertiary Education for further legislative action.
