Some Sports enthusiasts and spectators at the university of Benin Sports complex, venue for track and field events for the ongoing Edo Sports Festival have criticised officials of some participating Local Government councils, particularly Oredo for what they described as poor preparation of athletes.
Some of the sports lovers who came out in their large number to catch a glimpse of the happenings at the university sports complex while speaking with the Nigerian ObserverSports expressed disbelief over the use of tattered sports wear by some of the athletes,particularly Oredo representative.
Another fan who was concerned about the condition of a 12 year old athlete Blessing Otuyo who won Bronze for Oredo Local Government in 5000 Meters distant race,said he was disappointed in the council the child represented. He said it was unbelievable that Oredo the heartbeat council could not provide any good kit for the child and others to represent them.
The little girl who almost passed out after managing to complete the last lap,we gathered was yet to take a breakfast as at the time she finished the race at about 2:30 PM.
We also gathered that some of the athletes didn’t have any regular training on long distant race as well as medical examination before the game.
This against the promises most of the council chairmen made when they received the festival torch of unity in their domain.
They all assured of readiness and that their level of preparation was in top gear,but only few have proven that.
Akoko-Edo,Egor and few others were some of the Councils whose athletes were seen wearing their colours on the track.
