THE 10th Edition of Obaseki Grassroots Football Tournament will today kickoff at the main bowl of Igbogor Primary School football field, Igbogor Village in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to the organisers of the competition, 16 teams from various communities in the area are expected to do battle for honours, just as the defending Champions, Cocoa FC is expected to square up against Okeayo FC in the opening match billed to kickoff by 3:30pm.

The grassroots annual football fiesta, which is solely sponsored by Peter Obaseki started 10 (2010) years ago with fewer teams participating.

The sponsor, Peter Obaseki revealed to OBSERVERSports that the aim of the local football fiesta is to discover talents as numbers of players discovered, therefrom, are now plying their trades at different established clubsides across the country and beyond.

He said: ‘The aim is to create a platform for talent-hunting in sports, especially football, to enable Edo State regain her number one position in football and other sports.

He recalled that players from the state in the time past dominated different national teams of the country, thus, the need for the competition of this magnitude

“The state can reclaim its position in the nation if we keep to the model of bringing them young, and going for the best talents. I think if we keep it up, we will discover a lot of players who will play for our national teams.

“Our tournament aim is to produce future National and International football stars. It is football talent hunting at the grassroots, he averred.
