UROMI – Six children were at the weekend crushed to death by a vehicle at Arue-Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Two of the children killed by the car, a Mercedes Benz salon car, were sadly of the same parents.

The driver of car allegedly escaped immediately to police station to avoid been lynched by angry mob, where he was taken into custody.

It was gathered that the driver of the car, who was driving down from Irrua axis, lost control, skidded off the road and over the gutter to crush the children who were playing football.

Eyewitness, narrated that the deaths could have been more, but for the fact that the football game was halted when the parents of some of the players called them home to take their lunch.

According to the eyewitness, (name withheld), the six children killed in the accident who were between the ages of six and 13, were crushed while waiting for their colleagues to finish their meals and return for the game to restart.

Parents of two of the victims, Mr. Ernest Oamen and Prince Odion Akhere described the incident as a rude shock, lamenting that they never had any premonition of losing their children in such a manner.

Police at the Uromi Divisional headquarters declined to comment on the accident when newsmen visited.

The chairman of Esan North East Local Government Council, Hon. Austine Okoibhole who visited the parents of the victims to console them, described the incident as tragic, and revealed that the police was already investigating the incident.
