BENIN CITY – The Edo State Chapter of Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), have commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for his developmental strides in the State especially in the areas of infrastructure, economy, human and capital development.

The Association which also lauded the Obaseki’s led administration in Edo State for the ongoing Civil Service jobs recruitment in the state, passionately appealed to the Governor for the inclusion of Optometrists in the employment exercise.

NOA lamented that its members have not benefited from various employments carried out by the state government, hence, the need for the appeal.

The State Chairman of the Association, Dr. Joseph Owie, made the appeal yesterday in Benin City, the Edo State Capital, while addressing journalists during this year’s World Glaucoma Week, tagged “The World is bright, save your sight”

Dr. Owie disclosed that Glaucoma is a blinding eye disease that could only be diagnosed through regular eye examinations and advised residents of the state to visit Optometrists for regular eye check ups in order to live healthy life.

“It is mostly a symptomless blinding eye disease that runs in families and it has no cure but early detection and regular monitoring can enable the affected person to use his vision up to ripe old age”, Dr. Owie maintained

He revealed that the State Chapter of Nigerian Optometric Association would be rendering free glaucoma screening for Edo residents from March 7- 12, 2021 as part of the Association’s activities to mark this year’s event.

While advising against the practice of patronizing quacks in the Optometric practice which according to him could lead to long term negative effect, Dr. Owie, however, commended Professor Bosede Olajire Ajayi for the successful delivery of her inaugural lecture tilted “The eye: beyond seeing, the great storyteller of the soul”.
