The Edo State Waste Management Board (ESWMB) has arrested two persons for illegal collection of refuse and waste burning in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The arrest was made during the monitoring of the weekly environmental sanitation exercise across major roads, streets and markets in Benin City by officials of the State Waste Management Board.

The monitoring team led by the Assistant General Manager, Compliance, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mrs. Beatrice Imade Efosa, visited Boundary Road, Ihama Road, Sakponba Road, 2nd East Circular Road and the respective adjoining streets in the areas.

Other areas visited by the team include: Five Junction through TV Road and adjourning streets up to Isekhere Road; Lagos Street; Iwehen and Wire Road; Ibiwe Street; Ebo Street; Siluko Road; Oba Market Road; Ogbe Quarters; Plymouth Road; Stadium Road and Akenzua Road, among others.

Two illegal waste managers were arrested for waste burning and illegal collection of refuse.

Addressing journalists, Mrs. Efosa warned that residents who fail to comply with the weekly environmental sanitation exercise, will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the state’s extant environmental laws in regards to improper disposal of refuse, waste burning, overgrown weeds in premises, littering of premises, accumulation of dump, among others.
