BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has described the newly reconstructed Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium as a world-class facility that would restore the glory of Edo State as the home of Sports in Nigeria.

The governor, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State Capital, said the equipment at the facility would be harnessed to produce new national sporting heroes in Edo State.

According to him, “The sports complex boasts of a 12,000-capacity covered arena, with natural turf and refitted running tracks. This new look has spread across other sports, with extensive refurbishments on the tennis and squash courts, a new Olympic size swimming pool and indoor suspended gymnasium, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria.

“There are also available facilities for weightlifting, wrestling and other combat sports. The Stadium has also been outfitted with new high-capacity electronic score screens, floodlights and Video Assistant Referee technology.”

The governor further charged athletes from different parts of the country who are participating in the National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, to compete fairly in the games and showcase the product of the many hours spent practicing so as to be the best at what you do.

He added: “On these grounds, you will reap the reward of hard work, perseverance and determination. So, I urge you to put in your best; be a good sportsman and acknowledge when you have been bettered by your peers.

“For what else is the purpose of the games if not to test and produce the best among us that will do us all proud outside these shores.”
