BENIN CITY – Ahead of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, tension and violence have gripped Benin City, Edo State. Two youths were reportedly killed in a clash between supporters of the two dominant political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The incident occurred around the Forestry area of New Benin on May 17th. According to reports, the violence erupted following an earlier clash that left some APC youths injured.
In retaliation, armed men allegedly identified as PDP supporters attacked and killed two PDP youths, George Osarenren and Efosa Efehi. A third victim, Osakue Osagiator Joseph, narrowly escaped the attack.
Sources claim the killings were a direct consequence of the ongoing political tension between the two parties. Witnesses described the attackers as four men who arrived in a black Toyota Jeep and opened fire on the victims without provocation.
The incident has sparked fear and outrage among residents of the area. Many PDP supporters have reportedly gone into hiding, fearing for their lives.
Osakue Daniel, a member of the PDP, shared a statement condemning the killings:
“Unfortunately, George and Efosa were caught in the political battle while Osakue Osagiator Joseph was fortunate to have escaped death by the whiskers. Daniel Osakue who is a member of the Osakue family emphasised that since the killings of George and Efosa, the whereabouts of Osakue Osagiator Joseph is unknown as himself and other PDP Youths who are on the hit list of the gunmen are on the run following the vow made by the political cultists to kill any of them whenever they see them.”
It remains unclear if authorities have made any arrests in connection with the killings. However, the incident has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and instability as the country approaches the 2023 elections.
This incident underscores the need for all political actors to condemn violence and promote peaceful dialogue. It is crucial for authorities to ensure the safety of all citizens and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.
