ABUDU – With the 2023 general elections fast approaching, a former chairman of Orhionmwon local government area of Edo State, Hon. Otamere Aigbogun has called on indigenes of the area to take advantage of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) to register in the newly created Polling Units (PUs).
Aigbogun who spoke with The Nigerian Observer on Monday at Abudu maintained that no registration has taken place in any of the new 57 Polling Units (PUs) created by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
With already existing 208 PUs, the local government now have 265 voting centres.
According to the Ex council boss, the newly created PUs “will be closed if no registration” take place, which he noted will be to the disadvantage of the area.
INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu in June last year unveiled the locations of the newly created 56, 872 PUs; and announced the ban on voting in churches, mosques, palaces and other “inappropriate” places.
With the creation of the new PUs, the country now has 176, 846 full-fledged polling units against its initial 119, 974 PUs in the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The new PUs created across the 12 Wards in Orhionmwon are, Abionkula I: Area Customary Court, Primary Health Centre, Post office, Open Space by Oza road junction at Ago-Ogbeide, Girls Model secondary school (2 PUs), Edo state college of Education (2 PUs), all at Abudu; also Evbuobanosa town hall, Evbuobanosa health centre and Ogan primary health centre.
At Abionkula II: Open space by community borehole Evbohen, Iru town hall, Odionza primary school Oza, Ohensa town hall Oza, New health centre Oza, New town hall by postal agency, Oza primary health centre, Oza grammar school, and Oza grammar school staff quarters.
At Iyoba: Evbuoekabua town hall, Evbuoekabua primary school and Egbokor community town hall.
At Ugbeka: Ute-Oheze primary health centre.
At Ugboko: Ugo skill acquisition centre, Ugo health centre, St John Bosco Catholic college, Ugo market, and family health centre Iguododo.
At Ukpato: Okogbo mixed secondary school, primary health centre Evbuarue, Idu town hall, and primary health centre Igbekhue.
At Urhonigbe North: Uromehe model primary health centre, Uromehe market square, Iyobasa primary school Uromehe IV, Idumwugha town hall, and Idumwongo small market square.
At Urhonigbe south: Urhonigbe primary health centre, General hospital Urhonigbe, and District customary court Urhonigbe.
At Ugu: Umogun-nokhua primary school extension I, Umogun-nokhua primary school extension II, market square Ologbo, Ugo secondary school, and Urhehue market square opposite health centre.
At Evboesi: Evboesi primary health centre, Evboesi grammar school, Obazagbon old market, Evboesi market square and Evboesi town hall.
At Igbanke East: Open space by Aguba Hall, Ake, Oligie village hall and Ota primary school by Catholic church, while at Igbanke West: Idumodin primary school, Idumodin III (community hall) and market square, Idumodin IV.
Meanwhile, INEC has warned politicians and political parties against campaigning before the designated time, which is 90 days before the election and end 24 hours before votes are cast.
