The Edo State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has received the commendation of the federal government for its durable and quality infrastructural projects in the state.

The federal government’s Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) Audit Team of NEWMAP gave the commendation after assessing the quality of work at Edo NEWMAP’s intervention sites.

Briefing journalists at NEWMAP’s Secretariat in Benin City, the ESMP Lead Auditor, Ita Valentine, commended the compliance level of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) in the implementation of its intervention programmes in Edo State.

According to her, “there’s a great level of compliance of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) in the implementation of interventions, especially in areas such as the restoration of vegetative covers at the project intervention sites, and in the area of record-keeping.”

She hailed the projects for proper record keeping, monitoring and progress report in all its sites in the state, noting that they conformed to international ESMP best practice requirements.

Earlier, in his welcome remark, Coordinator, Edo NEWMAP, Dr. Tom Obaseki, said the government of Governor Godwin Obaseki will ensure quality projects so as to adequately check the problem of flooding and erosion across all Edo communities and improve the living standards of the people.

Reiterating the state government’s commitment to tackling erosion in the state, Obaseki said that the state government has built a total length of over 40kms of secondary drains.
