The Patrelli Secondary School (girls) Competition organised by the Edo State Cricket Association (ECA), began on Monday at the Iyoba Girls college Cricket pitch in Benin City, with the competition favourites, Ohonre Grammar school defeated by Government Science and Technical College (GSTC) on Day one.
GSTC batted first and scored 59 runs in 10 overs with a loss of five wickets. Ohonre Grammar school struggled in the second innings, scoring only 39 runs and losing six wickets at the end of 10 overs. Beauty Oguai of GSTC was named player of the match after taking two wickets of her opponents in just 5 runs. Chukwuwonye Christabel also of GSTC scored the most runs with 14 off 28 balls.
The second match for the day was quite intriguing as Iyoba girls won the toss and elected to bat first but surprisingly failed to score a single run in the first over as their opponents, Idia college bowled powerfully and precisely to upset the hosts.
Iyoba girls however settled into the game in the second over by scoring 4 runs and then 9, 10 and 6 runs respectively in the final three overs of the innings. Much credit to Omonasun Osayi, Shola Adekunle and Idiahi Glory who rose to the occasion by showcasing a superb batting performance. They took Iyoba’s total runs to 50 with 7 wickets to spare as Idia college chased 51 runs.
The second innings saw Idia college only managing 35 runs and losing all of her batters (wickets) in 9.3 overs.
The last game of the day was between Ohonre Grammar school and Glorious Crown Academy, a game that had started on a beautiful note but was interrupted by a heavy down pour, and in line with the rules of the competition, both teams shared 1 point each.
