The head coach of Edo Queens Football Club of Benin Wemimo Matthew has been sacked.

The sacking of Wemimo was announced by the Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Yusuf Alli during a press briefing shortly after the Super Six game between Edo Queens and Nasarawa Amazons which the sacked Wemimo managed side lost by a lone goal at the University of Benin Sports Complex.

According to Ali, who was visibly upset by the poor performance of Edo Queens in the ongoing NWFL Super six tournament directed the Assistant coach of the Club to function as head of the Technical crew in their remaining games of the tournament.

Yusuf Alli said:” By my understanding and from all my findings, the coach is not competent. She is not capable and we have to relieve her. Let the Assistant take over till the end of the super six. After that we will think of what to do next. For now,the coach of Edo Queens is sacked”.

The game was the second match of Edo Queens in the ongoing Super Six. They drew goalless with Delta Queens in their first match at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Monday.

Reacting to her sacking and the outcome of her team’s 1-0 loss to Nasarawa Amazons, coach Wemimo Matthew said there is no hard feelings, saying if that is how her employers want it,she also takes it like that. She noted that there is an improvement in the team she inherited.

According to her,” Edo Queens finished fourth to play in the super six last season. They were beaten home and away by Adamawa and couldn’t win any away. They also lost all their super six games but we defeated Adamawa Queens home and away and fished second in our group.” She explained.

On the 1-0 loss,Wemimo said it was a game of rivalry and that their opponents Nasarawa Amazons were given penalty which was the only goal they scored. She defended her girls,saying that they did their best against a highly experienced side.

In the first game of day two earlier decided at the University of Benin sports Complex, reigning champions of the Federation Cup, Bayelsa Queens showed class as they trounced Naija Ratels 4-0 to increase their chances of winning the league. Their newly acquired attacking sensation Monday Gift scored thrice to record the first hattrick of the super six tournament.

Monday Gift also distinguished herself in their first game as she scored the winning goal against defending champions Rivers Angels in the star match that ended 2-1.
