ABAKALIKI— On Monday June 13, 2022, a dark cloud of tragedy descended upon the community of Onicha in Ebonyi State, as security operatives launched a fierce operation in Abakiliki and neighboring communities in Ebonyi State. The operation was purportedly aimed at locating and apprehending perceived members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). What was meant to be an operation to restore security in the region took a grim turn, leading to the loss of innocent lives and widespread fear.
The security forces laid siege to the area, initiating a series of events that would forever scar the memory of the community. They alleged that some of the youth in the area were pro-Biafra supporters, and in the process, unarmed young people were targeted and met with a tragic end.
The armed military personnel, in their mission, opened fire on individuals they believed to be associated with IPOB, as well as supporters and bystanders in the community. This indiscriminate use of force resulted in the loss of lives, leaving families grieving and communities in shock.
Furthermore, the security forces executed a series of house raids, purportedly in search of IPOB members and supporters. These operations, however, claimed the lives of several innocent individuals who were not affiliated with the separatist group. Families in the area, were left mourning the loss of loved ones.
Chukwu Ifeyinwa Susan, like many others, experienced the harrowing consequences of this operation. Her father, Abia Chukwu Simon, and mother, Roseline Chukwu were among those whose lives were tragically cut short. The security forces identified them as IPOB members and supporters, a claim that they vehemently dispute.
According to an eyewitness, “our community, along with neighboring ones, has been transformed into a ghost town. The fear of being labeled as IPOB supporters or members has forced residents to flee for their lives, leaving behind their homes and livelihoods. The community, once vibrant and thriving, now stands deserted and in mourning.”
This tragedy not only highlights the severe consequences of security operations gone awry but also underscores the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the events. It is imperative that the truth is uncovered, justice is served, and the innocent lives lost are honored. The traumatized communities in Ebonyi State, including Onicha, are now calling for answers, accountability, and the restoration of peace in the region.
