Delta State Commissioner for Works (Urban and Highways), Mr. Noel Omodon,  has said that the state government would checkmate the Igwogwo erosion menace at Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

Mr. Omodon, who was accompanied by his Ministry of Environment counterpart, Mr Godspower Asiuwhu, and the Special Assistant to Governor Okowa on Media, Mr Fidelis Egugbo, made the statement while speaking with journalists at the erosion site.

He said that the situation at the site deserved urgent attention.

The works commissioner explained that they embarked on the inspection to assess the ecological damage at the Igwogwo erosion site when he learnt about it few days ago.

He said it was unfortunate that the damage had gotten close to residential buildings before the attention of the state government was drawn to the erosion menace.

According to him, “this erosion site is quite a novel one because it is very deep; we have a lot of erosion sites in the state, but this one is very deep.”

Speaking on what the state government intended to do about the erosion site, which has cut off the major road linking Okpanam and Akwukwu-Igbo and has become a great threat to lives and property in the area,

Mr. Omordon said that the state government would decide on that, but assured that works would be done at the site.

“The Commissioner for Environment is here with me and we will have to bring engineers from the ministry to look at the site.

“This is massive, but the governor has said that we should take measures to secure buildings and the road.

“unfortunately, the major road has caved in; we will work to mitigate the erosion,” he said.

Chief Asiuwhu, who had earlier visited the site, assured that the state government would intervene.
