The Nigerian Senate Tuesday in a motion is seeking for an urgent humanitarian support and assistance for victims of flooding across the country.

The motion sponsored by Senator Abdullahi Sankara (Jigawa North-West) and co-sponsored by other senators seeks to give succor to victims of flooding across the country.

The Senate notes with serious concerns the devastating impact of flooding resulting from heavy rainfall across the country especially in parts of Jigawa state have caused more damage to the livelihoods of some citizens; causing the death of more than 100 persons and displacement of thousands including women and children.

Senate noted that the flooding across the country washed away bridges, roads,farmlands and houses forcing victims to take refuge poorly organized shelters like schools and uncompleted buildings.

The lawmakers also expressed worries that the situation if not properly handled will cause great humanitarian and health crisis in the nation.

The Senate accordingly directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to coordinate with States Emergency Management Agencies especially in Jigawa state to urgently provide humanitarian assistance to affected flood ravaged areas in the country.

The Senate also urged relevant agencies to provide timely early warning to people living around flood prone areas with a view to forestall the loss of lives and properties.
