The Edo State Government has condemned social media reports criticizing the ongoing campaign by the state government to ensure environmental safety and protect the lives and property of Edo residents.

In a statement, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare said the report of a cooking gas sale outlet along Akenzua Street, affected by enforcement to compliance with environmental safety regulations by officials of the government, as being politically motivated, is highly regrettable and most unfortunate.

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to some social media reports concerning government officials, who were on official assignment as regard compliance with environmental safety regulations and enforcement within the Benin City metropolis.

“The social media report of one of those affected along Akenzua Street, a cooking gas sale outlet, belonging to Barr. Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor as being politically motivated, is highly regrettable and most unfortunate.

“Enforcements of such nature involving domestic gas sales outlets and other matters of environmental impact have been a routine exercise by the government to arrest and nip the very sad occurrences of fire outbreaks and other environmental hazards leading to loss of lives and property especially after the recent fire outbreak in Evbareke area of Benin that left scores of people hospitalised.”

The Commissioner added, “While Barr Ogieva is no doubt a very respected party man of high commendation for his industry, it should however be noted that the safety of the generality of Edo residents is of greater concern to Edo State Government.

“It is advised that we look beyond politicising matters of such grave importance to lives and property, as the government would always be held accountable in matters of public safety and wellbeing.”

“However, machinery has been put in place to ensure that the matter is amicably resolved for the well-being of all concerned,” he further noted.
