Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele is groping for support as the word is out that operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) are looking to arrest him on charges that may be security related.

Information reaching us indicates that men of the DSS may have presented a warrant of arrest in the name of the CBN governor for signature before a judge who was said to have declined to append his signature on the grounds that the claims contained therein were not sufficiently substantiated.

The whereabouts of Emefiele are currently unknown but it is said he is reaching out to his friends and contacts in the nation’s power structure to get his trackers off his tail.

Meanwhile, some economy watchers say that as the news of Emefiele’s predicament makes the rounds, there are fears it could result in the nation’s currency, the naira, suffering a further downturn as the development might be interpreted as indicating a strong wind ruffling feathers in the nation’s economy or polity, or both.

Other sources say the naira may escape such a downturn as such reactions are uncommon in developing economies such as Nigeria and more typical of more developed economies. They add, however, that such reverberations cannot be totally ruled out as Nigeria trades and transacts in the global marketplace and does not operate in a vacuum.

Some sources further say that the CBN governor’s failure to honour an invitation to appear before the House of Representatives Tuesday may have been a calculated move to avert arrest.
