…Fire Service prevents spread to adjoining buildings

A local oil mill at Edafe Street, off Upper Ekehuan Road, Ugbighoko Quarters, Benin City, Edo State, was razed by fire Wednesday, 28 December 2022.

The cause of fire was not immediately known. An eye witness, Patricia Uwaila, narrated that no worker was on duty at time the fire started at about 4pm on Wednesday. However, a little boy from the neighborhood who was at the premises oil mill to fetch water, first detected the fire coming from within the oil mill building. The boy said he tried to put out the fire by dousing it with water, then raised an alarm when his efforts proved futile.

The boy’s cries attracted others sympathisers who called the Edo State Fire Service. Men of the Fire Service promptly arrived the scene to battle the inferno.

It was the prompt intervention of the Edo State Fire Service team in controlling and extinguishing the fire that prevented damage to adjoining buildings.

The oil mill was severely damaged but there was no loss of life or limb.

It was gathered that the owner of the oil mill, one Mr. Ohenhen, had died in Benin a few months ago and that his remains were yet to be interred.


It could not be immediately be ascertained if the facility was insured.
