The glamorous Qatar 2022 World Cup will come to an end today, Sunday 18 December, with defending champions, France squaring up with evergreen challengers, Argentina for the most coveted prize. Today, Lionel Messi of Argentina will play against Kylian Mbappe of France. Both men play for the same club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of France.

This year’s edition of the World Cup will see 32 countries sharing $440 million in prize. And today’s winner will receive $42million, which is 10.5 percent higher than $38 million prize money received by France which won the 2018 edition held in Russia.

A total of 32 countries participated in the 2022 World Cup. From the group stages to the final match. Below is a breakdown of the prize money for each participating team:
The countries eliminated at the group stages are Belgium, Canada, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Ghana, Iran, Mexico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Tunisia, Uruguay and Wales. Each of these teams pocketed $9 million.

Australia, Japan, Poland, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and USA made it to the round of 16 and each of them collected $13 million. Also, Brazil, England, the Netherlands and Portugal made it to the quarter finals, and consequently, each of them collected $17 million.

In the third place match played yesterday, December 17, Croatia defeated Morocco by two goals to one, to claim the third position at the mundial. Morocco, which came fourth, will collect $25 million, while Croatia will collect $27 million.

The runner-up today will pocket $30 million, while the winner will go home with $42 million.
