Four police orderlies of former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim have been reported dead after fleeing gunmen attacked the former governor’s convoy.

Ohakim’s convoy was attacked in the evening of Monday, January 2, at Oriagu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

The former governor, who ruled Imo State from 2007-2011, reportedly escaped by the whiskers but four policemen in his convoy were not so lucky as the backup vehicle they were in was burnt, leaving them dead.

Ohakim was said to be with two of his children and was returning from a visit when the incident happened.

Punch quoted a source close to Ohakim as saying that it took the bravery of the former governor’s driver for him to escape.

“His Excellency was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him. Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him burnt,” Punch quoted the source to have said.

Following the incident, reports say a reinforcement came from Owerri, the state capital, to escort Ohakim to his house.
