ASABA: Vendors in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State have started rejecting the old naira notes in exchange for their goods and services, following the initial directives of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the old naira notes to cease as legal tenders from Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Adeniyi Hannah, a street vendor in NIGERCAT, stated that she accepted only the new notes and mobile transfers in exchange for her goods, adding that she would not sell on credit to those with the old naira notes.

Ovie Otuwera, a shop owner at the Ekpan Roundabout, who also runs a POS business, stated that he had stopped accepting the old notes and had put his POS business on hold till the new notes were available since the banks were still issuing old notes.

It was observed that the numerous POS centres along the main roads and streets in the area were closed for business all through the weekend with only a few operating with limited cash and still paying with old notes to anyone who would accept them.

Uvwie residents, especially vendors, are glad about the CBN extension of its initial deadline to February 10, 2023, but still skeptical about the old naira notes as legal tenders.
