…restates commitment to sports devt

The Edo State Government has disclosed plans to organise an annual “Head of Service Cup” and inter-ministerial sports tournament, as part of the government’s commitment to sports development in the state.

The State Deputy Governor,  Hon. Philip Shaibu, addressing journalists in Benin City, said the government is sustaining the investment in sports to promote healthy living, create jobs and boost the state’s economy.

He said the Governor Godwin Obaseki administration is focusing on grassroots sports with the aim of discovering and nurturing young talents to bring glory to Edo State and Nigeria.

Shaibu noted that as a part of the government’s commitment to sports development, it has also introduced sports as part of the curriculum in primary and secondary schools across the state.

On the Head of Service Cup and inter-ministerial sports tournament, the Deputy Governor said, “Every year, we are going to be having the Edo State Sports Festi, and the talents will be drawn from the grassroots. We will also introduce the Head of Service Cup where civil servants engage in sporting activities. We also have plans for inter-ministerial games, which will commence this year.”

He added, “In developing sports in Edo State, we have made it part of the curriculum in our primary and secondary schools. In our public schools, we will dedicate Wednesdays for sporting activities. It will also be part of the continuous assessment in our schools. The era for sports scholarship is back in Edo State.”
