Commercial banks in Warri and Effurun metropolis did not open for business on Monday, two days after Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

A visit to United Bank of Africa (UBA) on Okamagba Avenue in Warri South Local Government Area and the Water Resources Branch on Warri Sapele Road revealed that the banks were not open for business.

The situation was the same at First Bank branches on Airport Junction and Airport Road.

However, policeman were seen around and within the premises of the visited banks.

At Sterling Bank opposite Urhobo College on Warri/Sapele Road, a bank customer who simply gave his name as Reuben said he had come to the bank to report a failed transaction on the bank’s mobile app but the security man on duty told him to return on Wednesday.

The various banks had on the eve of the Saturday’s elections notified customers via SMS of early closure but said other payment channels were to remain open.

A source said the closure of banks was to forestall any possible form of attacks as Nigerians await the the results of the elections.

As at press time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was still releasing the results in trickles.
