Delta State Government has assured members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society of continued support and partnership with the organisation in addressing emergency situations and natural disasters in the state. Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, gave the assurance when members of the organisation visited him in his office in Asaba.

Chief Ukah noted that the state chapter of the Red Cross Society had been supporting the state government to manage disasters and emergency situations across the state and thanked the organisation for the interventions last year, especially in Ndokwa East, Isoko South and Ughelli South Local Government areas, during the 2022 flood disaster.

He said the intervention provided substantial relief to the people as well as encouraged and strengthened them to move on with their lives after the disaster. The SSG pledged the state government’s support for the body in the current intervention for effective service delivery in the state.

The leader of the visiting team and director, disaster management, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Abuja, Benson Agbro, said they were in the SSG’s office to solicit state government’s support as regards logistics to enable the state chapter of the body to activate its emergency first aids team.

Agbro in an interview said it was a feedback session for the benefit of the donors, noting that what they had done was good, but not enough to cover a large number of households.

He said they were looking at how to scale up the households they would meet with a view to supporting them with building materials for their shelters and rehabilitate the water pumps in their areas.

The senior disaster management, cash and voucher officer, International Federation of Red Cross, Abuja, Gabriel Nashon, in an interview, also said their activities included supporting those who suffered from flood disaster with relief materials to cushion the effect of the flood, adding that they had started with some communities in Isoko South Local Government Area.

He solicited the assistance of the state government to enable them achieve the set goals.
