The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun, candidate of PDP, has been declared winner of the Federal House of Representatives election conducted on Saturday in Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency.

The election returning officer, Prof. Solomon Omonigho, declared the speaker winner at the collation centre in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

Marcus pulled a total of 17,611 votes to defeat his APC opponent, Deacon Patrick Idiake who secured 16,500 votes, while the candidate of Labour Party, Engr. Solomon Emhonbotiti, got 10,456 votes.

Speaking after the victory, the speaker, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun, expressed gratitude to the people of Okpebholo Federal Constituency for coming out enmasse to vote for him, reiterating his pledge to be a vocal voice for the people of Esan Land.

He also pledged to champion people oriented bills that would guarantee food security, as well as those that would engender women development.

While promising not to betray the trust of the people, he said he has learnt from lessons gotten during the campaign to always be on the side of the people, irrespective of who feels hurt.

“I want to reiterate my willingness to be a vocal voice for the people of Esan Land. I want to reiterate my willingness to champion people oriented bills that would guarantee food security, and bring about women development.

“I also want to reiterate my position to make policies and programmes to protect my faith as a christian. I am going to rally round my colleagues to see that only bills that are people friendly; that recognise the secular Nigeria, and that would bring meaningful development to our constituents, we are going to support.

“My going to National Assembly is going to be a new dawn. It is not going to be business as usual. I am going to do things differently, to see that policies formulation is tainted towards the people.

“The people must be carried along. We are going to use our oversight functions to make sure that the people are not only going be consulted, but are part of implementation of the policies”, he pledged.
