The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that a property invaded and vandalised by youths as shown in a viral video on social media does not belong to the commission’s chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

INEC, in a statement on Saturday, March 25, said that Prof Yakubu does not own such magnitude of property anywhere in the world.

A video of youths invading and vandalising a property has been making the rounds on social media, with the property rumoured to belong to the INEC chairman.

INEC blamed the rumour on desperate politicians seeking to destroy the integrity of the electoral commission.

The statement signed by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman Saturday, insisted that Prof Yakubu does not own any property and that the rumours were part of a desperate smear campaign.

“The property being purportedly attacked by some youths in a video clip circulating on the social media does not belong to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu,” the statement said.

It said the speculations and rumours were simply other alternatives of relegating the image of the commission to the background.

The commission urged Nigerians to go about their daily business and disregard any similar occurrence.

“This narrative is indeed the latest in the series of desperate smear campaign efforts by mischief makers. The public should disregard it,” the statement said.
