Jos, Yola and Benin electricity distribution companies recorded the most improvement in electricity distribution and revenue in 2022. Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Jos DisCos, saw a 24 percent rise in electricity supply within its areas of coverage from 943.15 GWh in 2021 to 1,168.46GWh in 2022.

The states under the coverage of Jos DisCos include Bauchi, Benue, Gombe and Plateau.

Yola Distribution Company, Yola DisCos, supplied 486.94 GWh of electricity in 2022, which was 15 percent higher than 422 GWh in 2021. Yola DisCos covers states such as Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe.

On the part of Benin DisCos, a total of 2,278.48GWh of electricity was supplied in 2022, higher by 2 percent than the 2,240.37 GWh of electricity supplied in the previous year, the analysis of the latest electricity data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown.

Benin DisCos’ coverage area includes Edo, Ekiti, Delta and Ondo states.

The improvement in electricity supply by the three-aforementioned DisCos stood out as other remaining DisCos saw a decrease in electricity supply across Nigeria in 2022 compared to 2021.

According to NBS, the total electricity supplied across the entire federation in 2022 was 21,817.10 GWh compared to 23,360.59 GWh in 2021, representing a decrease of 7 percent.

Apart from Jos, Yola and Benin DisCos, the electricity supplied by the eight remaining DisCos declined, with the worst affected being Kaduna, Ibadan, Eko and Ikeja DisCos.

Electricity supplied by Kaduna DisCos fell by 19 percent in 2022 to 1,415.47 GWh from 1,757 GWh in 2021. Kaduna DisCos’ franchise area includes Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states.

Ibadan DisCos supplied 2,592.22 GWh of electricity in 2022, 12 percent lower than 2,957.17 GWh in the previous year. Ibadan DisCos’ coverage areas include Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi states.

Eko and Ikeja DisCos both cover Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital, and its biggest sub national government. Both DisCos recorded a 12 percent decline each in electricity supplied to their respective regions.

According to Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Eko DisCos covers the southern parts of Lagos State which include Ojo, Festac, Ijora, Mushin (also covers Orile areas, Apapa, Lekki (also covers Ibeju areas), Lagos Island (including Ajele areas) & part of Ogun State (Agbara)

Eko DisCos supplied 2,768.39 GWh in 2022 down from 3,159.20 GWh in 2021.

Ikeja DisCos’ franchise area, according to NERC, includes Abule Egba, Akowonjo, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Oshodi, and Shomolu areas of Lagos State.

In 2022, Ikeja DisCos supplied 3,601.41 GWh compared to 4,088.62 GWh in 2021. Other DisCos supplied lesser electricity in 2022 and the rate of decline in their electricity supply ranges from 1 to 9 percent.

In terms of revenue generation, the 11 DisCos generated N828.05 billion last year, which was 9 percent higher than N761.17 billion in 2021.

The most improvement in revenue generation by DisCos was by Yola DisCos which increased its income by 39 percent, followed by Benin DisCos whose revenue rose by 31 percent as well as Jos DisCos that recorded a 23 percent rise in revenue.

Port Harcourt DisCos, with a 22 percent increase in revenue, completed the list of the four DisCos that recorded double digits growth in income, while others recorded single digit growth in revenue.

The odd one out is Kaduna Discos which recorded a decline in revenue by 7 percent, from N30.37 billion in 2021 to N28.27 billion in 2022.

It should be recalled that in 2022, five electricity distribution companies: Kano, Benin, Kaduna, Ibadan and Port Harcourt came under new managements. The new management of Benin DisCos is led by Dr Henry Ajagbawa as its managing director/chief executive officer.
