…protesters cry foul

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court failed to hold proceedings on Tuesday, in the case of Afrobeat musician, Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, who is undergoing trial for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The court did not explain the absence of Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatubosun who is the presiding magistrate in the matter.

Seun Kuti was presented in court but returned to custody at the nearby Panti Police Station upon announcement that Chief Magistrate Olatubosun was absent.

One of the lawyers on Seun Kuti’s defence team said the team of lawyers had followed the police to Panti to see how the release of their client could be arranged as the four additional days of remand granted by the court expired Tuesday.

A mild drama played out in the inside and outside the court premises, as a crowd of young people sang and chanted that the musician should be released. They called themselves the ‘Free Seun Kuti Campaign Group’
