A bill for a law to regulate sanitation, pollution, and waste management in Edo passed second reading the State House of Assembly on Monday.

Leading the debate on the sanitation, pollution and waste management bill, the majority leader, Hon.Henry Okhuarobo, said the passage of the bill into law would address issues relating to erosion control, pollution and poor waste management in the state.

He said it will help in effectively managing waste disposal while addressing all the ills associated with environmental sanitation in the state.

The deputy leader, Hon.Sunday Ojiezele, who aligned with the opinions of the majority leader, said it will address waste management and disposal permanently in the state.

The bill was thereafter referred to the house standing committee on environment for fine-tuning.

Also during plenary on Monday, a bill for a law to establish the Unified Local Government Refuse Collection and Disposal Agency was read. The bill seeks to resolve the problem of who is statutorily mandated between local government and state to evacuate waste and collect levy for waste disposal.

The bill was thereafter referred to the house committee on local government for fine-tuning.

In the same vein, a bill for a law to make provisions for the emolument of elected political officers and public officers and other connected matters was also given its second reading on the floor of the house.

According to Hon. Nosayaba Okunbor, the bill when passed seeks to review the emoluments of elected officers who served in the state diligently.

The Clerk of the House, Audu Yahaya Omogbai, was directed to commence work on details of the bill and slate for clause-to-clause consideration on the next adjourned sitting day.
