The Edo State Government has sent a clear message reaffirming its unwavering commitment to enforcing the provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP Law 2021) and maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards any infractions.

Mrs. Barbara N. Osobajo, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, stated this at a press conference held in her office on Monday, where she spoke on behalf of Her Excellency, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, Chairperson of the Edo State Gender-Based Management Committee.

Mrs. Osobajo revealed that earlier discussions were held with Mrs. Tina Aje, a widow who had raised concerns to Her Excellency and the State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee through a viral video. The video alleged that Mrs. Aje and her children were denied access to her late husband’s burial by her husband’s maternal family in Benin City. The distressing video showed evidence of abuse, inhumane treatment, and degradation, all of which are direct violations of the VAPP Law.

In the meeting, Mrs. Aje shared a firsthand account of her traumatic experience, allowing the Ministry to gain a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding her ordeal and enabling appropriate support to be provided.
