The internet is on fire, and Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson seems to have lit the flame. The successful and accomplished actress-turned-author made history on Sunday, 18 June 2023 with the launch of her memoir, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’ at Peduase Valley Resort, an event which was attended by many celebrities and entrepreneurs.

Since the release of the book, it has set the internet on fire with everyone talking about it – well, not really about it but about the deep revelations that finally confirm some of the gossips that have been drifting around the mill for over a decade.

From paternity claims to her relationships with Iyanya, Sarkodie, Genevieve Nnaji, John Dumelo and other hot topics, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’ sure has the feel of a thriller movie that will keep celebrity gist lovers on the edge of their seats.

A brief review of ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’ found online describes the book, rightly, as an explosive and riveting account of a young woman who sets out to discover herself, but finds out that she has been living with a false identity.

“The drama and the twists and turns of this moving story have all the markings of a spell-binding movie script, except that the protagonist, who is an actor, is contending with a reality that intermittently soaks her pillow with tears,” the review said..

“Uncharacteristic of an autobiography, the author comes to her audience stark naked. The book opens the door widely into the life of the author and exposes the good, the bad and the ugly sides, not only of her life, but also of the make-believe world of celebrities.”

The 263-page book comes in 20 chapters that include Iyanya and my love life, #DumsorMustStop, Akufo-Addo’s call & the offer to contest on NPP ticket, A man’s word, Nigeria and its powerful men, Celebrity bubble and the ring I accepted with tears, The prize and price of Motherhood, A visit to Mr Nelson, “Your father is Peter Ala Adjetey”, DNA Tests with Peter Ala Adjetey’s children, and so on.

The author confirms her relationship with rapper Sarkodie and narrates how Sarkodie abandoned her at her lowest point back in 2010 when she took in for him. She had to abort the pregnancy.

Chapter 10 of the book focuses on Yvonne Nelson’s love life with Iyanya. Writing on her relationship with Iyanya, the actress claims that the singer cheated on her several times with ladies including fellow actress Tonto Dikeh.

“Anytime I left Iyanya’s place, another actress came over to him and sometimes slept over. The person turned out to be Tonto Dikeh of Nigeria. When I received the information I was heartbroken. I took to Twitter to rant. Tonto Dikeh responded saying people changed and so did feelings so I should move on,” Ms Nelson writes.

While netizens anxiously await Tonto Dikeh’s reply, Iyanya has taken the opportunity to promote his latest EP titled ‘Love&Trust’, which banged by the way.

In the 14th chapter titled “Genevieve Nnaji and the rest”, Yvonne Nelson refers to the veteran actress as “my unproblematic queen”. She talks about her time working with Genevieve Nnaji on the set of a movie titled “To Love and to Cherish” and describes how great it was working with the screen goddess.

In another chapter of the book, Yvonne Nelson narrates how she was approached in 2020 by some politicians to run for a seat in the Ghanaian Parliament, but she turned down the offer because of her friend and colleague, John Dumelo.

But while a lot of the drama trailing the book has focused on her romantic and failed relationships, the book’s main inspiration comes from from Yvonne Nelson’s relationship with her parents. Her mother had claimed a certain man named Oko Nelson was Yvonne’s father all her life despite the man’s complaints that he wasn’t. For years, Yvonne and her alleged father were estranged over the belief that he didn’t claim her. It wasn’t until Mr Nelson was ill that her mother finally revealed that he wasn’t her father. The actress describes the pain that followed this revelation and how her alleged father’s death further compounded it. The discovery of her true paternity gave birth to the title of the book, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’. The surname she bore over many years wasn’t her real surname.

The book is currently among Top 3 on Amazon.
