Nigeria’s Tenth National Assembly will be principled, decisive and not subject itself to manipulation from any quarters, Tajudeen Abbas, newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives said, Tuesday.

Addressing State House correspondents at Government House, Abuja, Abbas said the Tenth Assembly would be “no rubberstamp”.

The member representing Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), addressed the press after meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

He observed that in electing a new leadership, members of the House had expressed their votes across party lines, contrary to prevailing propaganda.

He further promised that the Tenth Assembly would harmonise with the executive to improve efficiency and challenge policies where necessary, towards the development of the country.

In Tuesday’s election for the leadership of the House of Representatives in Abuja, Abbas chalked up 352 of 359 votes cast.

Abbas, who has been a member of the House since 2011, was subsequently sworn in as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, succeeding Femi Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff-designate, to President Bola Tinubu.

Benjamin Kalu, a member representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State , emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the House.

Kalu who was unopposed, succeeds Wase, who was the Deputy Speaker of the House in the ninth National Assembly.
