…to phase out special promotions

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has given the directive to bring back the Awards and Commendation System for the Nigeria Police Force, an initiative introduced under his administration to boost motivation and encouragement among police officers.

In a press release signed by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP stated that this revamped commendation system represents a significant improvement from the past, as it now recognises all officers involved in every major case, moving away from exclusively focusing on arresting officers or commanders.

CSP Adejobi highlighted that the new system aligns with the provisions of Section 92 of the Police Act 2020 and Order 68 of the Force Orders and Instructions. It marks a milestone in acknowledging the collective efforts of all officers in maintaining law and order in the country.

“Traditionally, the Nigeria Police Force has a history of commending and rewarding specific officers who have shown exemplary performances during critical operations. With the new system, commendations and awards will now be extended to all officers who played a vital role in resolving major cases, fostering camaraderie, unity, and teamwork within the force. This development emphasises the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in achieving the force’s objectives,” Adejobi stated.

The statement also mentioned that the introduction of this commendation and awards system signifies the commitment to phase out unnecessary special promotions, which have previously been regarded as ridiculous in the NPF.

“The new Awards and Commendation System will provide a fair platform for officers to be acknowledged and rewarded for their exceptional dedication and performance, without relying solely on special promotions. The IGP envisions a renewed sense of pride and dedication among police officers, knowing that their hard work and commitment will be recognised and celebrated appropriately,” the statement added.

According to the statement, the IGP has initiated plans to hold the Nigeria Police Awards Night annually, where exceptional police personnel in all sectors and individuals who have contributed to the success of policing in Nigeria will be honored and celebrated. The 2023 Nigeria Police Awards Night will be announced in due course.

CSP Adejobi further emphasised that the Inspector-General of Police recognizes the need to revitalize the commendation and awards system within the Nigeria Police Force. He stated that the new Awards and Commendation System will foster a culture of appreciation, teamwork, and professional growth.

“By acknowledging the contributions of all officers involved in major cases, we strive to create a more unified and motivated Police Force, committed to upholding the principles and provisions of the Police Act 2020, the Force Orders and Instructions, and serving the Nigerian people with excellence and renewed vigor,” the statement concluded.
