The Chairman of Ika North East Local Government Council of Delta State, Hon. Victor Ebonka, has urged residents to desist from erecting structures on waterways to avoid flooding.

Hon Ebonka gave the admonition when he visited John Ben Street at Boji-Boji Owa.

He said it was very worrisome that people build houses along waterways in flagrant disregard of the town planning laws.

“Most people hardly engage the services of professionals when building, and it is not unconnected to the reason structures crop up everywhere and most of them on natural waterways,” he stated.

Hon. Ebonka urged the relevant department and ministry to ensure inspection of building sites before granting approval to build houses or stalls, aside from getting their certificates of occupancy.

While emphasising the effects in blocking waterways, he said, “Most of the structures some developers are erecting today will become a challenge to the locality in the future.”
