“May God not let you see what will make you believe”

Throughout his remarkable life, he wore many hats: a distinguished chief, a seasoned journalist, and a respected politician. Today, as we bid farewell to this iconic figure who lived to the admirable age of 94, we gather to pay tribute to a man whose contributions left an indelible mark on our hearts and our society.

As a journalist, Chief D U Edebiri demonstrated his commitment to unbiased reporting and the pursuit of truth. His words were potent, resonating throughout the nation, and his articles consistently struck a chord with readers of all backgrounds. His pen became a beacon for justice, shining a light on the stories that needed to be told. His fearless journalism set an example for aspiring writers and cultivated a sense of responsibility within the media industry.

Transitioning into politics, Chief D U Edebiri showcased extraordinary acumen and an unwavering commitment to mentor young, upcoming and potential public servants. He worked tirelessly to build bridges, seeking common ground in the pursuit of progress. His politics were rooted in compassion and inclusivity, always reflecting the needs and aspirations of the people of the Benin Kingdom. He had a genuine desire to make a difference.

As a young boy, Chief Edebiri was just the father of my friend, Timpson. I never really saw him or met him but was a regular visitor to his Ogiesoba residence and as was the norm then, we avoided eye contact with parents, especially fathers of our friends.

Many years later, I was handed over to Chief Edebiri to teach me the rudiments of Politics as it is played in Nigeria. It was in the year 1998, the goggled general had just passed and General Abdulsalami Abubakar was organizing a transition to civil rule .

I would attend meetings at his residence and observe. Early the following morning sometimes as early as 6am, I would return and he would explain the essence of all that was said and had taken place. There was no better political tutor to learn from. He was an encyclopedia, equipped with a memory like no other!

A few years after my political internship began with Chief Edebiri, he was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Esogban of Benin Kingdom. It was clear that he possessed a profound understanding of his community’s needs. He was traditionalist with a swagger like no other. He had presence and commanded enormous attention and respect. He had empathy, wisdom, and an unwavering dedication to the Benin Kingdom.

My early morning visits/tutorials continued. On one of those visits, we normally sit on the balcony looking into Ogiesoba street across the fence, a cat jumped into the compound. I had never seen Chief so animated. He rebuked the cat. He asked the cat what it was doing in his compound, he reminded the cat that he had warned it before and then concluded by saying, “Are you trying me.? “ Just then, the cat jumped out just as it had jumped in. I was dumbfounded at the monologue my leader was having with a cat. To break the awkward silence, I asked, “ what was all that about, do you really believe the cat could hear and understand you?

Chief D U Edebiri, The Esogban of Benin Kingdom, glanced at me and said, “ My Son, May God not let you see what will make you believe”. And I responded without hesitation, Amen!

Today, we stand in reverence of a true trailblazer who left an indelible mark on the tapestry of our society. The Esogban’s extraordinary journey encompassed the roles of chief, journalist, and politician, each one filled with unwavering dedication and undeniable impact. His legacy is one of unity, compassion, and a tireless pursuit of truth. Though we mourn his departure, we take solace in knowing that his influence will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary soul, let us honor his memory by emulating his principles, fighting for justice, and leading with empathy. For it is through the torch he leaves behind that we will preserve his invaluable contributions and keep his spirit alive.

Rest in eternal peace, dear mentor, knowing that you have forever shaped the lives of those who had the privilege of learning from you.
