…alleges Shallipopi’s mother tricked him with N50,000 as consent

Veteran Edo State-born musician, Monday Edo Igbinidu, popularly known as Pa Monday Edo, has alleged that Shallipopi’s mother tricked him by transferring N50,000 to his bank account after her son sampled his song “Obaisi” without his consent.

The veteran musician made the allegation in an interview on Independent Television (ITV) Benin, monitored by our reporter.

Pa Monday Edo described what is now referred to as settlement by Shallipopi’s mother as a cunning act. He said that no form of agreement was reached between himself and Shallipopi and that the N50,000 sent to him by Shallipopi’s mother had nothing to do with settlement for rights on his song, “Obaisi”.

The veteran singer alleged that Shallipopi’s mother said the N50,000 was a token to appreciate him until the arrival of her son (Shallipopi) from overseas when she and other family members would visit him (Pa Monday Edo) for proper settlement.

According to Pa Monday Edo, he never believed Shallipopi’s mother, whose name was never mentioned, would send him N50,000 to get the intellectual property rights on his song, “Obaisi”.

He explained how he felt when she requested for his account number, claiming she wanted to send money, which he, as someone who understands the importance of intellectual property, expected to be in the range of N500,000-N1 million. To his surprise, however, he received a credit alert of N50,000, which she later confirmed with a receipt.

According to the Edo-born musician, Shallipopi’s mother never told him the N50,000 she sent to his account was for settlement for “Obaisi”.

She never mentioned anything about settlement attached to the money, the Vatran Edo musician said, adding that even when she sent the money, he tried reaching her via a phone call but she wasn’t reachable.

Pa Monday Edo described the method through which Shallipopi released the sampled track, “Obapluto”, as inappropriate, adding that the singer didn’t seek his consent before releasing the track.

He said the singer infringed on his copyright property.

“It is not bad if he sang on my song but releasing it before telling me is bad. Come and settle me. I will tell you what to do,” he said.

Speaking further, Pa Monday Edo said Shallipopi’s mother assured him that she and some members of her family alongside her son would visit him for settlement and also promised to make provision for him (Pa Monday Edo) to make an appearance in the music video for the song.

The “Obaisi” crooner gave Shallipoppi an ultimatum of five working days to meet him or he would have his lawyer to contend with, noting that Shallipopi disrespected his personality by calling him unprintable names on social media.

Recall that Shallipopi, whose real name is Crown Uzaman, sampled Pa Monday Edo’s evergreen hit song titled “Obaisi” in his hit track ‘”Obapluto”, which has since gone viral on social media and music streaming platforms. “Obapluto” is a track in Shallipopi’s six-track EP titled “Planet Pluto”.
