Former senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Matthew Urhoghide has declared his intention to contest the governorship election of 2024 in Edo State, saying he is consulting with a party to be announced, in a few weeks.

Ex-senator Urhoghide disclosed this at the state Secretariat, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Edo State Council, while giving account of his stewardship for eight years at the Senate. He said he would join the race to stop the present political dynasty and change the narrative of Edo State.

Ex-senator Urhoghide however expressed his respect for the political ambition of the people of Edo Central Senatorial District.

“I have been seeing the people who have been indicating interest. I have been around for a while and I have a better history of what is going on in Edo State, today.

“If we are not careful the governorship will fall on the lap of someone who will make the situation worse. There are few hands that we must not allow their political dynasty to persist.

“For that reason, I have decided with a few of us to intervene. I am going to run for the governorship of Edo State. Otherwise, this thing will remain in the hands of people who have been manipulating the system.

“I am waiting to see how they will manipulate people like us. So, I want you to be partners”, he stated.

The former senator also spoke on his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDD, and his ongoing consultation with another party to be announced in a few weeks.

“You know I have resigned my membership from the PDP sometimes ago. The division in the party has become irreconcilable… So, I needed to put my senses together to say this is the way to go, few weeks from now I will tell you the party, I am consulting with the party”, he said.

Mathew Urhoghide represented Edo South Senatorial district in the 8th and 9th Senate which spanned 2015 to 2023.

The high point of the interaction was the presentation of his projects’ compendium as a senator for eight years, to the Edo NUJ Chairman, Comrade Festus Alenkhe.
