US Open defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has started his bid for second title at the tournament with a 6-2 3-2, as his first round opponent Dominik Koepfer was forced to retire with an ankle injury in the second set.

The 20-year-old began the game in his usual dominant fashion as he closed out the first set 6-2 but his German opponent, Dominik Koepfer, was forced to retire in the second set with an ankle injury with Alcaraz leading the second set 3-2.

Alcaraz will face Llody Harris next in the second round.
