The wife of Delta State Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, has stressed the need to promote breastfeeding among nursing mothers through sensitisation.

She harped on this during an event organised by her charity foundation, You Matter Charity Foundation, to commemorate the 2023 World Breastfeeding Week at the Asaba Specialist Hospital on Saturday.

The programme had the theme, “Let’s Make Breastfeeding and Work Work!”

According to Deaconess Oborevwori, “Breast milk develops the baby’s brain; it strengthens the bond between mother and child; it confers immunity and also prevents children from stooling and vomiting.”

She said that breastfed babies hardly fell sick, but could be sick when exposed to infection, stressing the need for nursing mothers to eat balanced diet to aid the free flow of breast milk.

Speaking also, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) in the hospital, Dr (Mrs) Peace Ighosewe, congratulated the governor’s wife on the launch of her charity foundation.

“It’s very encouraging to see that you have hit the ground running with a very important cause in our society,” the CMD said.

“We all know the wonderful benefits associated with breastfeeding.

“In our present economic situation with working mothers and the prevailing ignorance on proper nutrition, the issue of breastfeeding has been largely ignored.

“We are happy that you have decided to lend a voice to this course. It is our prayer that the awareness you have created today will go a long way to improving acceptance of the practice of breastfeeding.”

She thanked Deaconess Oborevwori for graciously accepting to commission the 10-bed labour room and double suite theatre in the hospital.

Activities to commemorate the week included sensitisation walk and health talks.

Present at the event were the wife of the Deputy Governor, Ezinne Katherine Onyeme; wife of the Speaker, Mrs Emomotimi Guwor; member representing Oshimili South Constituency at the state House of Assembly, Hon Bridget Anyafulu, and the Permanent Secretary, Delta State Ministry of Health, Dr (Mrs) Philomena Okeowo, among other dignitaries.
