Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) would acquire vast hectares of land for what has been termed Journalists’ Village if the aspiration of The POWER Team, one of the contesting blocs in the state NUJ election slated for Friday, October 6, 2023 comes to fruition.
The Power Team, led by Comrade Churchill Oyowe, made the promise when it visited Sapele NUJ Chapel on Friday 22 September to canvass for votes in the election that will take place in Asaba.
The POWER Team said that the village would have provisions of plots of land for journalists and facilities such as conference centre, market and a radio station, among others.
The team also promised to hold the council’s congresses quarterly on a rotational basic outside Asaba, saying that it would provide for inclusivity among members in other parts of the state. It said that stakeholders would be brought in to make the quarterly congresses robust and enriching to members.
Comrade Oyowe, who is vying for the office of the Chairman of the Delta State NUJ, was accompanied by Comrade Felix Ekwu who is vying for the office of the Vice Chairman, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, for the office of Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, Assistant Secretary, and Comrade Caroline Ubini, as Treasurer.
Speaking to members of NUJ Sapele Chapel, Comrade Oyowe said the campaign slogan “POWER” epitomises what they intend to do when voted into office.
He explained that P stands for professionalism as they pledge to carry on leadership by the books by upholding ethical tenets and training among others; O stands for Openness by putting up a pure display of accountability and transparency; and W stands for Welfarism as they hope to be responsive and safeguard welfare of members within the capacity of the council, their places of work and the society in general.
Furthermore, he said E is for engagement as they hope to reach out to stakeholders and come up with strong reasons why the Union should be given attention in areas of concern, while R stands for Resourcefulness, for they plan to be innovative and creative by investing to create wealth for members of the union.
