Djokovic progresses to the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows after surviving a major scare from his Serbian compatriot Laslo Djere to win the match 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-3.
Laslo started the match in stunning fashion to break Djokovic’s serve in the 9th game of the opening set to claim the set 6-4. He took the momentum to the second set and repeated the feat to equally claim the second set 6-4.
On the cusp of elimination, the Serbian tennis powerhouse showed the class and resilience that has become his trademark through the year to break Djere’s serve in the opening game of the third set.
This proved to be the turning point in the game as the 3 time US Open champion grabbed a foothold on the match to claim the third and the fourth set 6-1 respectively to force a fifth set.
Djokovic once again showed his class and composure in the fifth and deciding set to break Djere’s serve again in the fourth game to eventually wrap up the set 6-3 and the match 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-3 to progress to the round of 16.
It marks the first time since 2011 against Roger Federer that Djokovic overturned a 2-set deficit to win a match at the US Open.
Djokovic’s hunt for a fourth US Open and a record-extending 24th grand slam continues as he takes on Borna Gojo on Sunday
