Edo State Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Hon Christabel Omoh Ekwu, has rescued one Miss Goodness Nwanmwen, a seven-year-old girl suffering from physical abuse.

The commissioner swung into action as soon as she got the information that the child had been abused by her step father John Abinba, the alleged husband of Jennifer John, who is the mother of Goodness.

The ministry immediately relocated the victim alongside her younger brother to Daisy Danjuma Ehanire Gender Based Violence Centre where they can be catered for with proper protection.

Hon. Ekwu further urged parents to show love and care for their children, rather than subjecting them to physical or emotional abuse, which can lead to deformity of the child, stressing that Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki will leave no stone unturned in ensuring perpetrators of such act don’t go unpunished.

The commissioner also asserted that the Violence against Persons Prohibition Law is a call for all Edo residents to obey the law, while encouraging those who are yet to embrace the law to do so.

On her part, Jenniffer John, the mother of the victim said that she has been making efforts to stop her husband from abusing the child, but all to no avail, as he continued to regularly beat up the child.

However, John Abinba has been apprehended by security agents for further interrogation.
