In what was a repeat of the 2021 US Open final, Novak Djokovic defeated 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, battling past the dogged Russian 6-3 7-6 6-3 to claim a record equalling 4th US Open and a record extending 24th grand slam men’s title in flushing Meadows in New York on Sunday.

He becomes the oldest man to win the US Open title at the age of 36 and also equals Margaret Court record of 24 singles grand slam titles.

Djokovic was making a return to the US Open finals after missing last year’s edition after being barred from entering the US due to his unvaccinated status.

In what was a pulsating encounter, Djokovic began the first set in top form cruising to dominant 6-3 first set win in 45 mins. The second set was a thrilling affair as both men held their serve game needing a tie breaker to separate the two men. Djokovic emerged victorious in the tie breaks, claiming a 7-5 win to lead 2-0 after a near 1hour 45 minutes battle in the second set.

The Serb was moved to kill the match, once again breaking Medvedev’s serve to lead the 3rd set 3-1, but Medvedev answered right back with his first break of the match to level up the 3rd set at 3-3.

Djokovic once again dug into break Medvedev’s serve and see out the 3rd set 6-3 to clinch his 3rd grand slam of the year.
