…mulls mobile courts to facilitate gender-based violence cases

The Federal Government has declared its intention to pursue a legal action against a couple, Ifeanyi and Christabel Ewuru, from Enugu State, for allegations of child molestation and the neglect of their eight-year-old daughter.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Ohanenye, made this announcement during a press conference in Abuja, expressing the government’s unwavering commitment to securing justice for the young victim while sending a clear message to potential offenders.

The minister voiced her deep concern about the persistent issues of sexual and gender-based violence, harmful traditional practices, and various forms of abuse targeting women, children, and vulnerable individuals.

“The eight-year-old girl has endured repeated molestation at the hands of her stepfather, who has also subjected her to physical harm and transmitted diseases, as confirmed by medical examinations and legal experts,” the minister disclosed.

She said that despite the case being brought to court, the accused was granted bail by a magistrate.

Ohanenye questioned the reasons behind the accused’s release, particularly emphasizing the mother’s plea for her husband’s freedom.

She voiced her concerns about the vulnerable child and the emotional trauma she had endured due to threats and her inability to report the abuse.

“We are filing negligence charges against the woman, as her inaction allowed the child to suffer over an extended period. It is disheartening that she defended the man responsible for her daughter’s suffering, seemingly to preserve their marriage or for other reasons,” she stated.

Furthermore, the minister announced the government’s determination to initiate legal proceedings against the man on behalf of the young girl, ensuring he is held accountable for his actions.

“The principles of the rule of law, truth, and justice must prevail, particularly for this young girl,” she affirmed.

Ohanenye unveiled the government’s plans to establish mobile courts to expedite the prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence cases, along with other harmful practices targeting women and children, with the goal of ensuring justice for survivors.

“These actions are intended to provide solace to this young girl and prevent the long-term psychological impact of her ordeal. There is no longer room for such impunity in our country. Commit a crime, face the consequences,” she said.

She appealed to the President, the Attorney General, and the Chief Judges of states to fast-track the establishment of mobile courts, thereby accelerating proceedings related to women’s affairs and ensuring prompt protection and justice for survivors.
