… as Danil Medvedev beats Alexander again
Jannik Sinner stunned Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the men’s singles semifinal match of the China Open tennis tournament at the Diamond Court in Beijing, on Tuesday.
With the win over Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, Jannik Sinner of Italy has reached the final of the China Open where he’ll face Daniil Medvedev, who recorded his fourth win of the season over Alexander Zverev.
Elsewhere, Adrian Mannarino secured his second title of the season by beating Sebastian Korda in the Astana Open final, Eurosports report.
A break in each set was enough for world No. 3 Medvedev as he won 6-4 6-3.
Medvedev is now 4-1 against Zverev in 2023 and leads the overall head-to-head record 10-7.
“It’s an amazing, strong field so it’s great to be in the final,” Medvedev said. “I’m really happy with my level.
“Roof closed, different conditions today, much faster. Both of us are big servers so it came down to just a few opportunities and I managed to serve better when I had break points to save than he did.”
The 2021 US Open champion played at a high level to beat Zverev again.
The German had a chance to break at 3-3 after a brilliant passing shot, scrambling to reach a volley and then putting it away past Medvedev at the net.
But Medvedev held, helped by some fine shot-making of his own as he fired a cross-court winner past Zverev.
Medvedev’s first chance to break came in the 10th game.
Zverev fought back from 15-40 down but Medvedev took the set at the third attempt with a forehand winner down the line.
Medvedev saved two break points in the second set to nudge 2-1 ahead.
The decisive moment of a high-quality set came in the eighth game.
Zverev did well to win a point at 15-30, passing Medvedev at the net after a long rally, but it was the Russian who won the next two points to take the game, securing the break with a winner down the line.
Medvedev then served out the win confidently to book his place in the final.
In the opposite semi-final, sixth seed Sinner denied Alcaraz the chance of claiming a seventh crown of the season with a 7-6(4) 6-1 win over the Spaniard.
Sinner was far superior in the important moments to move past Alcaraz in straight sets and became the first player to register four tour-level wins against the world No. 2.
After twice trailing by a break and almost falling 0-3 behind in the first set – fighting off two break points – the momentum shifted towards Sinner.
He was too strong for Alcaraz in the deciding tiebreak, and against all odds, took the lead.
Sinner’s momentum carried on into the second set, where Alcaraz’s struggles attempting to break Sinner continued.
The Wimbledon champion squandered five break points – an area of his game that has troubled him in recent months.
Sinner took advantage and posted four games in a row to take the match.
In the final of the Astana Open, Adrian Mannarino won his second title of the season with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory against Sebastian Korda.
Mannarino, 35, trailed by a set and a break but reeled off five games in a row to level the match. He then came through in the deciding set to secure the title.
